The major causes of adult acne

One of the major skin issues occurring these days is acne in adults. This is a skin condition that happens when the hair follicles of your skin become clogged with dead skin and oils. This can lead to blackheads, whiteheads, and even severe pimples which mostly appear on the forehead, chest, face and different places on your body.

The problem of acne is quite common among teenagers but adults are no exception. It is frustrating and doesn’t matter in what age it affects. It is embarrassing, especially for adults. Here are some of the major causes of acne occurring in adults.

1. Hormonal fluctuation
Hormonal fluctuation is one of the major causes of acne in adults and occurs due to the fluctuation in progesterone and estrogen levels in a female. This also includes the hormonal changes which occur due to menopause and pregnancy.

Also, if you have already started or stopped consuming birth pills or if you have just switched to some other brand of birth control pills then your skin might tend to breakout.

IUDs can also lead to the problem of acne in females and aggravate the problem of breaking out further. Men also suffer from acne but it doesn’t occur due to fluctuation in hormones.

2. Severe stress
A lot of research has shown that stress and acne problems are directly proportional. During stress, the acne-causing hormones rise as a result of which the oil glands tend to secrete more oil resulting in the clogging of the hair follicles.

This causes your skin to break out severely and therefore it can be understood that suffering from extreme stress may also lead to acne in adults.

3. Use of hair care and skincare products
Make sure to read the labels for the ingredients in the hair care and skincare products that you are purchasing. Look for words such as “non-comedogenic” and “oil-free” before buying these products. All of these terms are used for those products that won’t clog your pores thus preventing acne.

Also, don’t forget to look for these words in your everyday products like face wash, moisturizers, and sunblocks. If you have oily skin then it is important for all your skin and hair care products to be non-comedogenic, as it will prevent clogged pores that lead to breakouts.

4. Any medical condition
A handful amount of people suffer from the problems of acne due to undiagnosed medical issues. Women who are suffering from polycystic ovarian syndrome or PCOS have a chronic or seasonal issue of acne. This can only be controlled by a dermatologist who will keep a record on the history of the patient and conduct some important blood tests.

5. Consumption of medicines
It is impossible to check if any particular medicine has the side effect of aggravating the problem of acne. Consulting a dermatologist can help you in finding out whether or not the medicine you are consuming is causing the problem of acne.

Hence, these are some of the major causes that can aggravate the problem of acne, especially in adults.
