Breast Cancer Early Warning Signs

Breast cancer is one of the leading female cancers to date, but it also affects a small number of men. The risk factors for breast cancer include a family history of the disease, genetics, a high risk lesion, genetic factors like the BRCA1 and the BRCA2 gene mutation, and the exposure to chest radiation as a child. Today, breast cancer does not mean a death sentence as there are many different treatment options available depending on the stage of the disease.

Every woman, and man, should be aware of the early warning signs of breast cancer:

  1. A lump in the breast

Lumps are not uncommon in the breast because the tissues are lumpy, but a lump that is harder than the other lumps should be checked out by a doctor. A lump that is only present in one breast should also warrant attention. A self breast exam should be done regularly for any noticeable changes in the lump.

  1. Nipple discharge

Nipple discharge can raise a red flag, but if the discharge is not due to squeezing the nipple, or an infection, a doctor should be seen for cancer screening especially if the discharge is only in one breast and blood is present.

  1. Changes in breast size or shape

Any changes in the size of shape of the breast can be a sure indicator that something is abnormally wrong. These changes could be due to swelling which is not always normal. Some changes in the breast occur during hormonal changes in the body, but can better be determined by a doctor if cancer is present.

  1. Pain in a breast

Breast pain, or unexplained pain in the shoulder or back may be early warning signs of the disease. You should see a doctor if these symptoms persist. Cancer can be ruled out as a cause of the pain, but adhering to the needs of the body is the best option. The breast may have itching, and this, too, can be an early sign of breast cancer.

  1. Lumps or swollen lymph nodes in the armpit

Sometimes, women and men can find a lump in their armpit that could represent the presence of cancer. Because this lump is not in the breast itself, many people will not give it the attention it needs. The Lymph nodes can have a lump that can be cancerous. Do not neglect this sign even though it is not directly in the breast. It could affect the breast tissue is left unattended.
